Death metal
El movimiento death metal adoptó posiciones más fuertes en cuanto a su fuerza a la hora de ejecutarlo. El death metal utilizaba la velocidad y la agresividad del thrash y el hardcore, fusionados con las letras acerca de satanismo y violencia. Los cantantes death metal típicamente utilizan voces tenebrosas, incluso guturales (llamados death metal growls) combinados con voces graves y otras técnicas poco comunes. Las guitarras tienen más distorsión y la percusión es extremadamente más rápida. Los cambios frecuentes de tempo también son típicos.
Una teoría dice que el nombre del género proviene del título de la canción Death Metal del disco Seven Churches de Possessed. Otros consideran que el nombre del género se debe al título la demo de los pioneros Death: Death by metal.
Deicide, Morbid Angel, Slaughter junto a Death y Obituary fueron los líderes de la escena death metal que nació en Florida a mediados de los 80. En el Reino Unido, surgieron grupos estrechamente relacionados con el grindcore, liderados por Napalm Death y Extreme Noise Terror. En Escandinavia se desarrolla una importante escena death, con grupos como Entombed y Dismember.
En la última década ha sufrido innovaciones que han creado a su vez nuevos subgéneros.Así podemos mencionar el death metal tradicicional, el death metal melódico con exponentes como Eternal Tears of Sorrow, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy o Dark Tranquillity, el death metal técnico con exponentes como Hate Eternal o Krisiun, progressive death metal con grupos como Opeth y el brutal death metal en el que destacan Mortician, Cannibal Corpse, Vomit The Soul, Purulent, Asesino, All Shall Perish, Aborted, We Came With Broken Teeth y Dying Fetus. El death metal más puro también ha influido de manera importante en la aparición del grindcore, por ejemplo grupos como Napalm Death o Terrorizer.
Los riffs son aún más bestiales, chirriantes y pesados y las voces se convierten en rugidos desgarrados que, en muchos casos, hacen imposible la tarea de ententer las letras. Muy siniestro, bebe de las fuentes de Black Sabbath, sin duda, iconos idolatrados por los amantes del metal oscuro, aunque habría que mencionar también a los suizos Celtic Frost como pioneros en comenzar a experimentar (mucho le deben los grupos Doom y Black). Death, Napalm Death, At The Gates, Sentenced y Venom son una buena muestra, aunque algunos de ellos evolucionaron hacia estilos más ambientales y menos extremos.
A fines de los años 90 surge una banda que va en contra de las letras satánicas características del death metal y que proclama el cristianismo; esta banda se llama Mortification.
